A flexographic printer’s anilox roll — its laser-engraved cells completely plugged with UV-cured ink — was sent to Keertek for a last-resort cleaning test. The ultrasonic process recovered original cell volume without the micro-abrasion that shortens roll life.
Anilox rolls are among the most precision-sensitive components in printing: each cell must deliver an exact ink volume to maintain color consistency. UV ink hardening inside cells is a persistent problem, and mechanical cleaning methods (brushing, blasting) gradually wear down cell walls, reducing volume over time. Keertek deployed multi-frequency ultrasonic cleaning with a solvent-based ink-stripping chemistry tuned for UV-cured polymers.
After the cycle, cell-volume measurements (using a microscope-based volume measurement system) showed recovery to 98% of the original specification — with zero measurable cell-wall thinning. The print house, previously replacing rolls every 6–8 months due to plugging, now extends roll service life beyond 18 months with scheduled ultrasonic cleaning.
